In October 2008, Gisela Capitain and Friedrich Petzel opened their new gallery, Capitain Petzel, in Berlin. Located at Karl Marx Allee 45 in Berlin Mitte, the gallery is housed in one of the city´s historical landmarks, a 1,300 square meter glass-encased modernist building preserved from the Socialist Era.
Capitain Petzel´s inaugural exhibition, a groupshow entitled 'Kunst im Heim', invited artists of Galerie Gisela Capitain and Friedrich Petzel Gallery to respond to the architecture, form, history and surroundings of the pavilion, a classic example of East German Modernism, designed by Josef Kaiser and Walter Franek and built in 1964 to house display of Fine and Applied Arts from the countries of the Eastern Bloc.
Capitain Petzel continues to present exhibitions of the established international artists represented by the galleries in Cologne and New York, as well as adding new artists to its programme of exhibitions.
