Black Beans/ Liquid Gold is a contemporary art exhibition that features 21 artists who were inspired by coffee. A survey of artworks of small format will be on display and will range from drawings, paintings, sculptures, mix-media, animation, sound art and performance. This pool of international artists has a connection to coffee at different levels. Coffee can be perceived as an addiction, a pleasure or a temptation, as a question of politics, a social issue or a historical event but also as an investment or as a connection to one’s homeland.
By looking closely at the mundane ritual of sipping a cup of coffee – that, in many ways, is an excuse to gather with friends, family or to hold business meetings – the visitor will discover that these precious black beans have a lot of history behind them and that they also have triggered deep social transformations in many cultures. As a loyal artist’s companion, coffee became a strong concept for the conception of this exhibit.
Black Beans/ Liquid Gold invites the viewer to reflect about the value of a commodity which is part of our everyday consumption and which has become a vital necessity for our society.
The Black Beans/ Liquid Gold show is a cooperation of Galeria Galou, New York City, USA, and Galerie R31, Berlin, Germany.
