Loock Galerie is pleased to open the group show Celebrities on Friday, July 4, 2014. ‘Displaying’ or ‘flaunting’ famous people was fostered above all by the influence and growing relevance of the media. In art history, it was mainly Pop Art with Andy Warhol that advanced this obsession or cult. Photography in its entire range, from portrait and paparazzi photography to journalistic photography, played an important role here. Seven artists, either represented by the gallery or the gallery’s friends, present their individual interpretation of this theme – in the media painting, drawing, watercolour, and photography.
With these different modes of expression, celebrities from the worlds of culture, politics, and the world of comics are taken up, and their juxtaposition points to the relationship of cult and social context.
The show includes works by Sibylle Bergemann, Ivan Grubanov, Anton Henning, York der Knöfel, Dieter Mammel, and Maurice Weiss.
Tue–Sat: 11am–6pm
