Artist Talk Der undisziplinerte Raum // The undisciplined space

THE UNDISCIPLINED SPACE – a talk with Prof. Klaus Honnef and Prof. Stephan Günzel accompanying the exhibition „The Focus Room – Adolf Luther’s 1960s works“

Artistic installations are multi-causal ensembles whose individual parts - often temporarily limited and adapted to the exhibition space - are repeatedly re-linked with each other. They form a continuum that includes all dimensions of space, may they be of social, political or economic aspects.

Klaus Honnef, born 1939, friend and companion of Luther for many years, is an art critic, curator and was honorary professor for “theory of photography” at Kassel art academy. He is the author of numerous books on contemporary painting and photography. Next to numerous other projects he directed the section "idea + idea/light" at documenta 5 in collaboration with the artist Konrad Fischer and together with Evelyn Weiss realised the sections “painting” and “photography” at documenta 6.

Stephan Günzel, born 1971, holds a Ph.D. in philosophy and teaches media theory at the BTK University of Applied Sciences in Berlin. He is an expert in space theory, held visiting professorships for space studies (Humboldt University Berlin) as well as history of spatial knowledge (University of Trier) and published respective anthologies and reference books relevant to the phenomenon of space.

Adolf Luther (1912 - 1991) was a ZERO artist and visionary because he created objects and installations with the aim of making "rushing through space images" (A. Luther) and light phenomena visible. His works are thus instruments which surfaces reflect all artistic as well as architectural and sociological qualities of spaces.
