Golden Hearts: An exhibition with photographs by Sibylle Bergemann and Martin Parr

Opening: September 26, 2018 | 7–9pm
September 27 – December 21, 2018

Golden Hearts contrasts select black-and-white photographs from the series Clärchens Ballhaus (1976) by Sibylle Bergemann and Yate´s Wine Lodges (1983) by Martin Parr. The bar as one of the oldest institutions of everyday life is a space of social relationships and interactions. Cheerfulness and community oppose isolation and tristesse. Political systems and social structures determine each other mutually. Artistically unique the photographers point the camera at their surrounding everyday reality. In socialist East-Berlin Bergemann photographs 1976 people in the search of love and dispersal. The location is the dancing bar Clärchens Ballhaus in Berlin, where amongst labourers and soldiers also guests from West-Berlin met together of which the latter had to leave the country shortly before midnight. In 1983, Martin Parr photographed Yate's Wine Lodges in northern England, where a Victorian atmosphere prevails. Their founder Peter Yates wanted to popularize Australian wine in Great Britain and he also sold whole-grain flour, canned sardines, and tea to offer workers healthy food.
