Jacob Whibley at Bourouina Gallery on Berlin Art Grid

Opening Jacob Whibley

Artists: jacob whibley
Genres: collages and sculpture

Bourouina Gallery is thrilled to announce the first solo exhibition by Jacob Whibley in Europe:

"Exploring the theme of interstitial spaces, my collages and sculptures show geometric and organic forms in a suspended moment of transition. Drawing inspiration from Modernist design and unfulfilled histories, I assemble each collage through successive movements and emphasize the contrast between found and intentionally crafted elements. These tactile moments allude to structural and topographic forms as they shift and reconfigure towards newer possibilities.

I am fascinated with paper’s ability to absorb a great sense of history and memory (beyond its basic function as a surface for recording printed and written information). Each fold, bend, and exchange (human and environmental) imprints upon it those interactions and places. I use these charged bits of ephemera to enhance the historical connectivity of my collages." Jacob Whibley, born 1978 in Toronto, Canada, is exploring the theme of interstitial spaces in his works. His collages and sculptures, created in an almost architectonical process, show geometric and organic forms in a suspended moment of transition. Drawing inspiration from Modernist design and unfulfilled histories, he assembles each collage through successive movements and emphasize the contrast between found and intentionally crafted elements. These tactile moments allude to structural and topographic forms as they shift and reconfigure towards newer possibilities.
Whibley is fascinated with paper’s ability to absorb a great sense of history and memory (beyond its basic function as a surface for recording printed and written information). Each fold, bend, mark and exchange (human and environmental) imprints upon it those interactions and places. He uses these charged bits of ephemera in his works to enhance the historical connectivity of his works. In his latest Burnt-series, he anticipates papers own deconstruction by burning his motif into the paper.
