For this exhibition at SomoS, Sergey Melnitchenko (Ukraine) shares his series titled “Loneliness Online.” The series is a sociocultural research on pathogenicity in social networks, caused by the social psychological trauma of isolation. Melnitchenko shows us loneliness without sympathy and support.

Loneliness Online also marks a moment in time, when the novelty value of video-enabled technology was leading to widespread adoption, but at the same time it still maintained an aura of mystique and an insider appeal (think Chatroulette rather than FaceTime). These randomized and anonymous online encounters were and still are a vital forum and an outlet for desires, not only exhibitionism, but a space of freedom, fuelled by the anonymity and the digital remove. This also makes it a space of experimentation, not only shame, but release for many from the constraints of society and prejudicial attitudes they may encounter “in real life”.

Thus, in 2013 Melnitchenko created Loneliness Online, one of the artist's first projects exploring the boundaries of public and intimate spaces, by experimenting with a kind of cameraless photography only recently enabled by our increasingly intimate relationship with digital devices:

“I waited until I come across such a companion, then "photographed" him by pressing ‘Prt Sc’. For all the time I spent in the video chats, I captured about 200-300 of such characters, and then selected the most interesting in my opinion. This is how the left side of the picture developed”.

The project represents of the state of loneliness through the pairing of solitary images of trees and strangers’ bodies as seen in video chat rooms online. Melnitchenko brings a layer of complexity and a poetic meaning through his sensitive juxtaposition of the intimate imagery.

Für diese Fotoausstellung bei SomoS stellt Sergej Melnitschenko (geb. 1991, Ukraine) seine Fotoserie “Loneliness Online” vor. Die Ausstellung ist eine soziokulturelle Untersuchung zur Pathogenität in sozialen Netzwerken, die durch das sozialpsychologische Trauma der Isolation verursacht wird. In dieser von Anastasia Leonova kuratierten Einzelausstellung zeigt Melnitschenko Einsamkeit ohne Mitgefühl und Beistand.

Loneliness Online markiert einen Zeitpunkt, zu dem der Neuheitswert der videofähigen Technologie zu einer weit verbreiteten Akzeptanz führte, sie aber immer noch von etwas Mystischem und einem gewissen Insider-Appeal umgeben war (denken Sie dabei eher an Chatroulette statt an FaceTime). Diese zufälligen und anonymen Online-Begegnungen waren und sind immer noch ein wichtiges Forum und Ventil für Wünsche, nicht nur für Exhibitionismus. Es sind Räume der Freiheit, die von der Anonymität und der digitalen Distanz leben. Es sind Räume zum Experimentieren, nicht zum Schämen, sondern für viele auch zur Befreiung von den Zwängen der Gesellschaft und den Vorurteilen, auf die sie im wirklichen Leben treffen können.

So schuf Melnitchenko im Jahr 2013 Loneliness Online, eines seiner ersten Projekte, das die Grenzen öffentlicher und intimer Räume erforscht, indem es mit einer Art Fotografie ohne Kamera experimentierte, die erst seit Kurzem durch unsere immer intimere Beziehung zu digitalen Geräten ermöglicht wird:

“Ich wartete, bis ich auf so jemanden stieß, dann ‘fotografierte’ ich ihn, indem ich ‘Prt Sc’ drückte. Während der ganzen Zeit, die ich in den Video-Chats verbracht habe, habe ich etwa 200-300 solcher Charaktere aufgenommen und dann die meiner Meinung nach interessantesten ausgewählt. So entstand die linke Seite des Bildes.”
