Opening Sculptures made of earth, fire, water, air (part I) - Nuno Vicente

Artists: nuno vicente
Genres: Sculpture, Installation, video, site-specific installations

Sculptures made of earth, fire, water, air is a solo exhibition by
Nuno Vicente. But this is no ordinary solo exhibition.
Over a series of months Vicente will be presenting his artworks
individually at João Cocteau.
For each piece, he has invited a curator to work with him and build a
dialogue around his chosen artwork. In doing so,
Vicente has subtly turned the tables on the typical artist-curator
dynamic: here it is the artist who is selecting a series
of curators to respond to an existing framework, rather than the other
way around.

The series will culminate in the release of a publication about the
artworks as well as the respective outcomes from the curators,
thus completing the narrative to appear as if a solo exhibition
occurred in the traditional sense.

First up will be the video and installation Transformation of a dead
body into a Foundation for Life (with a response by Lauren Reid):

Vicente was in Sardinia when he found a small dead turtle. He wanted
to keep it for his art practice,
waiting for the right moment to use it. One day he decided to burn it.
He then blended the ashes with poured concrete
to make two simple vessels for birds to feed from.

------------

Nuno Vicente (France/Portugal) lives and works in Berlin. Working
across video, installation and sculpture, his practice infuses the
poetic with the practical, often building devices to contain and
capture the impossible: memories, existence, movement, time. Vicente
has exhibited widely throughout Europe, including at the Museum of the
city, Lisbon and ARCO, Madrid.

Lauren Reid (Australia) is currently a coordinator at Node Center for Curatorial Studies and also an independent curator. Her curatorial approach focuses on the spaces between art, psychology, science, metaphysics and esotericism with an interest in in-between states of being and the question of how we view and define our world. Her most recently curated exhibitions include Out of the black (REH Kunst) and Material Conversion (Grimmuseum). Lauren Reid http://laurenkreid.com/
