With regards to content as well as technique the photographs by Zoé Beausire make use of very different aspects. The two series “A travers champs“ and “Tremblement“, which are presented in the first room of the gallery, combine aesthetic images and graphic elements with spontaneous impressions and disturbing, sometimes even ironic details, that clash with conventional viewing habits of the recipient. The landscapes portrayed in her photographs are coined by civilisation, whereas her observations of urbanity are infused with nature. Zoé Beausire captures these traces that are burnt into the landscape and into society, and inevitably blends these different spheres with each other. Through the compilation of her different works, a narrative sequel aspect evolves, that evokes desire, melancholy and unease from the viewer and confronts him with our paradox, sometimes tragicomical existence in the world. Often these little details manage to precisely emphasise the complex hierarchical systems and structures of our society, making them more accessible to the viewer. The photo series „Rosette, Mauricette et Roby“ and „Huis clos“ in the second room of the gallery document in a very empathetic and personal way the artist’s preoccupation with the process of aging and the resulting bodily and mental changes within the artist’s closest circle of family. The photos are posing questions about physical adjacency and the relation of life and death. In a symbolical as well as narrative way, the artist shows drastically and intensely the inevitable process of body changes, of alteration in social life and in social participation. Contentwise the works complement one another to a deeply touching construct of hard reality, gentle narrative sightings of details, fragmented memories and staged sequences of dreams. In this way a new, direct and at the same time very empathetic view is generated on the omnipresent topic of demographic changes in our society.
Zoé Beausire studied photography at ECAL/Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne. Her works show a clear reference to the Swiss photo school, that has generated a very own style of photography, influencing the contemporary photography enormously. In this tradition she creates very precise technical works, which open new visual worlds and extend the medium of documentary
photography.
On the occasion of the exhibition, we are publishing a photo book with the same title of the series „Rosette, Mauricette et Roby“. Via the medium of photo book the artist has the possibility to relate the single photographs to the above mentioned aspects with regards to content, condensing them into a story and thus creating a unity. Like with the other publication of the publishing house, it’s not about the single photo, but about the configuration, the layout and the rhythm of the book. It’s the sequence of the photos that tells a story in a certain or different way. It’s an old process, but still the strongest for telling documentary stories.
