Bernhard Leitner: SoundSpaceSculpture – Objects, notation, graphic arts
Since the 1960s, Bernhard Leitner has devoted his work to exploring the relationship between sound, space, and the body. Born in Austria in 1938, Bernhard Leitner studied architecture in Vienna where he encountered works by avant-garde composers. From 1968 to 1982 Bernhard Leitner lived in New York and started to create sound architectures and sound-space sculptures, whereby he was the first to define sound as a sculptural material in the fine arts. Leitner pioneered the sound installation as an art form and is one of the internationally most respected artists working in time-based art.
Our selection presents an retrospective view on the important work of Bernhard Leitner, ranging from his early Soundsuit (1975) and SOUNDCUBE (1970/2009)
to more recent sound installations such as Steelspringwaves (2003) and Pulsating silence (2007).
