LiTE-HAUS Galerie + Projektraum welcomes Belgian multi-media artist Frank Verreyken for his first solo exhibition in Berlin. Verreyken's moody photographic observations encourage quiet contemplation. Like images from dreams or old memories, the narrative evoked by his works remind us of the places we have visited; or perhaps only heard of and wish to see.
Verreyken is a photographer and painter who lives and works in Belgium. He participated in several group and solo exhibitions all over the world: London, Washington, Santa Monica, Budapest, Los Angeles, Brussels, and Antwerp.
In this exhibition he focuses fundamentally on the times we live in. Part of his work exists as photographic material. The pictures are not sharp, have a strong roughness and show brutality. Sometimes even the remains of the manipulation can be seen. These raw edges of the pictures seamlessly fade into the raw, partially deconstructed society. This work is created in the context of a degenerative era: the economic implosion, the multi-ethnic problems, the sociological impact of changing life patterns. Landscapes are stripped from their monotonous, predictable aesthetics and make place for a different, surprising aesthetic. What remains fascinating is the creation of "the image" and its relation to reality. In opposition to the photographic work, in the same room - white, nearly etheric - he presents paintings with an explicit horizon. The whiteness stands for hope, the horizon for stability.
