JOMO (joy of missing out)

Create a place for yourself, by yourself. How does it feel? What does it look like? How does it smell? Lean into boredom. Thoughts float. Time passes. There’s a certain quality in being alone, retreating from the world. Neoliberalism teaches mindfulness and meditation just for the sake of increasing productivity, being up and ready again, to be present and to present yourself.

JOMO is about not caring. It’s about joyfully missing out. It’s about returning to oneself, to a place of freedom, curiosity and playfulness, to explore and create.

Arnias, Mann and Macpherson create spaces by themselves, for themselves, experimenting with forms, narration and movement. Sophie MacPherson uses strategies of repetition to investigate movements in space and time. Notions of style, dance and the body are brought into focus. Stephanie Mann creates playful environments and compositions of everyday objects which then become landscapes of the subconscious. And Luis Arnias produced an intimate portrait of the simple but beautiful qualities of milk, while capturing scenes of a lazy summer afternoon.

Luis Arnias (Boston/US) is a filmmaker from Venezuela who currently lives and works in Boston, MA. In 2009, he completed the diploma program at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Stephanie Mann (Edinburgh/UK) graduated from Edinburgh College of Art MFA in 2013. Recent projects include: Artist in Residence for Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop; 'Linking, Linking Arms', The Bothy at Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art; 'WADE IN - WADE IN - WADE IN' Eastern Edge Gallery, Newfoundland, Canada; 'IMAGE MIRAGE IAMAGE' Moana, Perth, Australia.

Sophie Macpherson (Glasgow/UK, Berlin/DE), makes films, live events, objects and drawings. Her practice often draws on personal records to investigate subtle communications informing our notions of identity.
