Light and shadow – the counterplay between the two puts the visible and the hidden into constant oscillation. In the infinity of possible shades, light and shadow phase in Robert Seidel's latest projection sculpture for 401contemporary. In a twisted, sculptural form a video sequence unfolds, which frees the shadow of its light serving purpose and gives it an autonomous existence. Decoupled from visual-physical constraints Seidel's work breaks the boundaries of three-dimensional space and puts it into a dynamic, sounding continuum.

Robert Seidel (1977) is an artist, filmmaker and curator who originally began studying biology to finish with a media design diploma at the Bauhaus University Weimar. His projections, installations and experimental films have been shown in numerous international festivals, in galleries as well as museums like Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, ZKM Karlsruhe, Art Center Nabi Seoul, LACMA Los Angeles and MOCA Taipei. His films have been honoured with several prices like the Honorary Award of KunstFilmBiennale Cologne (Germany), DEFA-Stiftung Berlin (Germany) and the Jürgen-Ponto-Stiftung Frankfurt am Main (Germany). Seidel lives and works in Berlin.
