Photocopy collages by Jason Haufe at Temporary Gallery Berlin. 15 April - 15 May 2015 .

To exploit the potential of mechanical reproduction, and not give in to it, is the aim of Australian artist Jason Haufe. In spite of the works handmade appearance, not one line or form has been hand drawn. Haufe uses pieces of paper that were either photocopied from the source material directly, or manipulated digitally on a computer and then printed and photocopied. Using photocopies as the material for collage, Haufe is freed from the drudgery of mark making, unique or irregular forms can be repeated many times in new and different combinations. New directions in the work are embedded in the process, for Haufe also photocopies finished work, accumulating new information to feed back into the process. Not only are undulations and shifts in the line the result of an emphasis on discovery and decision making, but so to the direction the work takes. Here, a rigorous formalism goes hand in hand with an ease with uncertainty. Having hijacked the tools of mechanical reproduction, Haufe enriches the possibilities of abstraction.
