In my latest series of work, I am studying phenomena like
otherness, outsiderness and isolation and how this is
manifesting. As reasons for isolating people, can be discerned either political manipulation,
or ignorance, fear and - very commonly- a certain level of primitive thinking.
This phenomenon can be irrational, and concerns a variety of issues ;
from gender, sexual tendencies to race and religions.
This happens also when people are experiencing threat from the inside or from the outside.
In the video the singer is singing about her/our deep desire to be accepted.
Ideas behind my artworking:
I have been working with installations since early 1980.
Scientific research, philosophy, the postmodernistic onthological and episthemolgical interpretion of the world have become the main inspiration and resource behind my work. Evolution of the human mind, especially the interconnectedness of matter and mind and the emergent properties connected to this, are the important constituents of my studies, and can be seen as allegorical reflections in my work. I´m also interested in how different cultures are effecting the collective perception of the world and how this manifests on the local and personal level. I’m often assembling my installations to fill several rooms, so that the subject matter can be sensed through the connotations
of the combined materials, form, and thought. Some of the materials I use have a transient character, like water, breeze, light, grease, and pigment powders. But also stones, steel, glass and other reflecting materials are often parts of the installations. I prefer to create installations in which beauty combines with austerity, meaning and thought.

THE RUG
Terracotta 105cm x 60 cm / 104 tiles; 7,5 x 7,5 cm
The social role of the female citizens has by the impact of religions been restricted to serving and giving birth. Even today many cultures want to restrict the freedom of women leaving out of consideration that even she is a feeling and thinking human.
The story of Pandora, - who as a result of her actions -, produced the world with all evil, is still deeply rooted in our world.
Catharina Kajander is through her terracotta-works conveying
us stories from her own life, including her childhood obervations.
