triggerhappyproductions presents: Erik Kessels – in almost every picture #12 at Torstrasse 161, 10115 Berlin on Berlin Art Grid
Genres: Photography

Erik Kessels is an internationally renowned creative director, curator, artist and art collector. His series in almost every picture is a limited collection of photographs. It looks into photography as an integral part of everyday life. Photography serves to manifest the changes that occur over a course of time. Erik Kessels selects pictures from private collections, which he finds on flea markets or the internet and edits them into a photo series. His series tell human stories that occur around us. It captures experiences that we share in almost every picture.

Each edition is dedicated to a single subject that is repeatedly photographed over years. For example, in almost every picture #7 introduces Ria van Dijk, a woman from the Netherlands who is passionate about shooting at fairground stalls. Not only the subject itself is extraordinary, but also the perspective from which it is taken. Viewer and photographer become the target at the same time. Edition #8 portrays a bunny that carries all sorts of everyday objects on its head. The owner of the pet decided to set up a diary of headpieces that suit the bunny perfectly – a roll of toilet paper, a small teapot or pastries.

in almost every picture #12 shares the absurdity and humour of its preceding editions. It tells the story of a Moroccan wedding filmmaker. Larbi Laaraichi lives in Fez, where he’s been capturing the happiest days of people’s lives since the early Nineties. While videoing their big days, he also ensures that he gets a shot of himself in action. These images plaster the walls of his shop. His shots are not only amateur advertisements, they tell the story of Larbi himself. Kessels has ordered the portraits chronologically, hinting at changes in Larbi’s life in almost every picture. We see changes in Larbi’s fashion taste. And we see Larbi’s career path through his equipment: proudly wielding an old-school video camera to (a decade later) atop a stepladder with a slick, space-age camera.
